Culicoides are a type of biting midge which can carry a range of tropical diseases. Female Culicoides, like the mosquito, are attracted to animals and humans where they feed on blood. If the midge is infected with bluetongue virus or any of the diseases identified below, then it will transmit the disease to its victim. Similarly if the victim is infected and the midge is not, then the blood meal will pass the virus to the midge.
