E' morto negli Stati Uniti all'età di 30 anni Lorenzo Odone, affetto da quando aveva cinque anni da una rarissima malattia neurodegenerativa. Per tentare di salvarlo i genitori crearono una formula passata alle cronache come ''Olio di Lorenzo'', divenuto anche il titolo di un film del 1992 con Susan Sarandon e Nick Nolte. Rimasto paralizzato negli ultimi anni, Lorenzo Odone è morto per le conseguenze di una polmonite.
Quando aveva cinque anni a Lorenzo, figlio di genitori italiani, fu diagnosticato l'adrenoleucodistrofia, una rarissima malattia neorodegenerativa genetica e i medici predissero che sarebbe vissuto pochi anni. Il padre, Augusto Odone, e sua moglie, Michaela, riuscirono a trovare un rimedio, una miscela di acido oleico e acido erucico, ricavati da comuni olii da cucina, che riuscirono efficacemente a ritardare il decorso della malattia.
Ricordo bene il film e la vicenda, perché negli anni '90, specie grazie al traino del film, la vicenda ebbe molta eco.
Phil Collins gli dedicò una canzone, Lorenzo:
Once upon a time I made a lion roar -
he was sleeping in the sunbeams on the old zoo floor.
I had gone to see the park where my papa used to play,

to East Africa.
