Come da titolo sono alle prese con questo problema

i miei HD sono i seguenti
(tutti impostati su cable select) :

hda 40 gb ntfs con windowsxp (primary master)
hdb è un cdrom (primary slave)
hdc 160 gb ntfs (secondary master)
hdd 160 gb ntfs /secondary slave)
sda1 40gb e qui voglio mettere linux (è un disco sata)

grub cataloga quindi questi hd come
hd 0,0
hd 1,0
hd 2,0
hd 3,0

nel file menu.lst mi sembra tutto regolare (se serve lo posto)
ma al boot compare l'errore 17 che dovrebbe voler dire che trova la partizione ma che non sa che file system c'è

lo strano è che se metto il cdrom di ubuntu e scelgo "boot dal primo hard disk" parte tutto (anche windows) mentre se premo F8 al boot e scelgo IO il primo hard disk (quello da 40gb) arriva l'errore 17

altra info x cercare di darvi più mezzi possibili x aiutarmi è che se metto il cdrom e faccio "boot dal primo hard disk" e poi edito grub usando il tasto C
e digito find /boot/grub/stage1 mi da hd 3,0 mentre se uso il tasto E e cambio root (hd3,0) in root (hd0,0) mi da "cannot mount select partition"

grazie in anticipo a chi mi può aiutare, se servono altre info fatemi sapere

ho sbagliato una cosa nella descrizione
se faccio find /boot/grub/stage1 mi da
Error 15: File not found

Forse l'errore è proprio nel menu.lst, dove bisogna controllare che la voce groot corrisponda a quella dove è presente il menu.lst :mm:

più in alto, nella sezione "automagic kernels list" dovrebbe esserci una voce del tipo
# groot=(hd0,2)
cambialo con la partizione dove sta ubuntu e poi dal terminale dai il comando (da root)

la riga che mi dici c'è ma mi sa che è già su 3,0 ..... :grrr:

:mm: già... allora le impostazioni sono giuste (l'ho proposto perchè anch'io avevo avuto un error 17 in passato ed era per uno "scambio" di hard disk)

Ma forse c'è una cosa che non ho capito :inn: l'errore ti arriva prima che compaia il menu di GRUB oppure dopo aver scelto il sistema operativo?

dove hai installato grub? In quale MBR?
